On the very threshold one sees the difficulty that the subject is too big— too big for treatment on the Daisy Miller scale: which is what the Harper people have in their mind. And, alas, there is no inspiration or incentive whatever in writing for Harper save the sole pecuniary one. They want, ever, the smaller, the slighter, the safer, the inferior thing; and the company one keeps in their magazine is of a most paralysing dreariness.
